SafeType makes keyboard entry as comfortable as shaking hands!

This revolutionary keyboard is the only one that can place the user in an orthopedically neutral position while doing data entry. It cannot be adjusted improperly by the user.

Consider the position of your hands typing at a traditional keyboard. Hands are twisted to fit the keyboard. Holding your wrist in any position other that flattened position causes what physiologists call ‘static muscle loading’, a constant tension. A side effect of this tension is reduced muscular waste removal, discomfort and sometimes it leads to injury. Researchers have demonstrated that complete blockage of nerve signals can occur when pressure equal to 40mm of Mercury is applied for an 8-hour period. It takes only 20 degrees of "twist" to create this much pressure. In fact, a complete blockage of nerve signals can occur when hands and wrists are worked in this position over an 8 hour period.

The SafeType's unusual design inherently prevents significant wrist extension. It is the only keyboard noted in a major university study to substantially reduce high-stress postures that contribute to repetitive stress injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

The Cornell University study shows
"
that the use of a vertical split-keyboard design can substantially improve typing wrist postures for subjects, both in terms of flexion/extension and radial/ulnar deviation movements. These postural improvements occur immediately within the short-term typing tasks (15 minutes) that were used. These results were obtained for touch typists who were not experiencing any musculoskeletal problems, and this represents a 'best-case' scenario for typing

Even though the vertical split-keyboard is an unfamiliar design there was only a relatively small decrement in typing performance and a very small difference in error rates between keyboards. Given the short-term nature of this study it is predicted that touch typist subjects will quickly master the vertical split-keyboard because this preserves the familiar QWERTY layout."

Connection: PS2 connection.
Mac users will need an adaptor like a "Y"-Mouse (not included)
Operating system compatibility: works with all versions of Windows since 3.1.
Warranty: one year parts replacement

Feedback: "I have used the SafeType keyboard with a couple of people. The biggest problem I have run into is positioning the mouse within easy reach while typing. If mousing is frequent, a vertically oriented mouse is necessary to avoid repeated supination/pronation when moving from the keyboard to the mouse. The mouse must also be positioned at a good height. So, I really encourage increased use of keystrokes rather than mousing. Careful positioning of the chair armrests is also necessary. Most of my users have compromised shoulder function and need to rest on armrests or desktop intermittently."
